What Is Body Contouring

Before we get into the details of Body Sculpting or Contouring with OrthoSculpt™, let’s look at body contouring or sculpting for context.

Body contouring, also known as body sculpting, is a surgical operation used to alter a specific part of the body most often the torso area. Your procedure may entail:

  • Getting rid of or tightening the extra skin
  • Elimination of excess fat
  • Reshaping or contouring specific areas of your body

Body sculpting is not a substitute for weight loss. Instead, it addresses sculpting the body in regions where weight reduction is impractical, stubborn, or requires removing a significant amount of excess skin.

What Are The Different Types of Body Contouring?

Lipolysis, or liposuction, is a term used to describe non-surgical body reshaping. Lipolysis can be accomplished in a variety of ways, including:

  • Cryolipolysis uses freezing temperatures to destroy fat cells (for example, CoolSculpting®).
  • Cold laser lipolysis uses lasers to destroy fat cells (for example, Zerona®).
  • Injection lipolysis involves putting deoxycholic acid into the body to target fat cells (for example, Kybella®).
  • Laser-assisted lipolysis technology uses medical laser beams to liquefy the fat, and then it’s sucked out via a cannula (for example, SmartLipo®).
  • Ultra-sound lipolysis uses sound waves to “shake” targeted fat cells loose for healthy harvesting with a cannula (VASER).

What Happens During Liposuction And Other Surgical Body Contouring?

The majority of cosmetic vs. plastic surgery procedures are performed in the surgeon’s surgical facility. Depending on what you’ve done, the treatment might run anywhere from an hour to several hours.

For cosmetic surgical procedures with body contouring, the surgeon and his medical team will do the following:

  • Marks the sites pre-operatively
  • Clean and disinfect the skin in the surgical area
  • Fit you for a compression garment if you are having liposuction
  • Precisely position you on a surgical table and perform safety checks with their team and anesthesiologist throughout your procedure
  • Administer anesthesia – local or generally based on the procedure
  • Make tiny incisions for liposuction ports or larger incisions based on the procedure(s) performed, like a tummy tuck or a breast procedure
  • Suction out excess fat using liposuction by itself or in combination with other procedures
  • Remove, reposition or shape tissue and reduce excess fat to create the contours desired
  • Tightens the ab muscles during a full abdominoplasty
  • Remove or lift skin for a breast reduction or lift
  • Trim excess skin (excision) where j-plasma skin tightening is not adequate, or the patient’s age is a factor
  • Preserve and prepare healthy fat for transfer
  • Transfer fat to desired locations like the breast, buttocks, or face (if applicable)
  • May do muscle etching, especially on the abdomen (with VASER lipo only)
  • May do OrthoSculpt, taking contouring and etching to an anatomical level not possible before (with Dr. Cyr only)

What Happens After I Have Body Contouring?

After most cosmetic surgical operations, patients return home the same day. Your surgeon may suggest an overnight stay at a recovery facility if your procedures are extensive, where you will have a nurse available all hours to assist you and keep an eye on you during the first 24 – 48 hours.

Someone must drive you and remain with you for the first night if you are going home. You can expect a small tube with a drain near larger incisions, like a tummy tuck, to drain fluid and avoid swelling.

Your surgical team will give you recovery instructions. They may include:

  • Coming to see the doctor for a check-up in the days after your procedure
  • Caring for the drains and changing the bandages.
  • Minding over-activity but remaining ambulatory (moving around) to lymphatic swelling and avoid blood clots.
  • When you can shower and wash your hair
  • Wear your compression garment. It is an essential component of your final results
  • Taking medications to relieve pain and prevent infection for several days or more if your procedures are extensive
  • Reporting any rare complications will be explained pre-operatively.

Body Sculpting or Contouring with OrthoSculpt and VASER-Assisted High-Definition Liposuction

First, let’s talk a little about VASER ultrasound-assisted high-definition liposuction. It is a highly effective technology for body sculpting in the hands of an artist.

For a variety of reasons, many surgeons see VASER as the cutting-edge in liposuction:

  • There is minimal bruising since it does not harm blood vessels or connective tissue.
  • Patients experience relatively little discomfort and bruising after the VASER lipo.
  • Unlike Laser or other procedures, VASER preserves the integrity of the fat cells, allowing them to be utilized for transplanting.
  • More fat may be safely removed than with other liposuction methods.
  • Unlike all other methods, both the subcutaneous and deep layers can be suctioned.

This method requires that a surgeon be trained to do muscle etching, typically used for the abs, arms, and legs. Dr. Cyr uses VASER lipo to sculpt the superficial tissues and his proprietary OrthoSculpt to define the 3-dimensional surface musculature.

So, what is OrthoSculpt?

What If Your Cosmetic Surgeon Could See The Potential Beyond Your Skin?

With formal liposculpture and cosmetic surgery training, Dr. Cyr’s exceptional grasp of the body’s musculoskeletal structure improved anatomic correctness and precision. By combining these two surgical skills, he pioneered a new technique known as OrthoSculpting.

Fat is removed from the subcutaneous fat layer on the underlying anatomical structure underneath the skin. Because of his extensive Orthopaedic experience and knowledge of the muscular anatomy, Dr. Cyr has been exceptionally trained to “see” beneath the skin’s surface.
